Learn about the Apache War and see a historic military fort from the 1880s.
Fort Verde State Historic Park is located in Camp Verde, Arizona. The park was established in 1970 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1870, U.S. Army troops occupied the park, and the actual fort was established the very next year. This was an active primary military base during the Central Arizona Indian Wars. The fort was abandoned in April of 1891, and the land was sold in small parcels and at an auction. The Camp Verde citizens felt that the land was important, so Fort Verde State Historic Park was established.
Fort Verde State Historic Park has four surviving buildings made of pica and adobe. They periodically schedule living history programs at this park, allowing visitors to experience some of Arizona's history. They also have amenities like picnic tables, restrooms, and plenty of parking for all vehicles, including RVs and buses. Admission rates are $7 per adult, $4 per youth (7-13), and free for children up to six years old. The park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Discover some of Arizona's rich history at Fort Verde State Historic Park.
