Take a tour of the Flavel House that features Queen Anne architecture.
Built in the late 1800s, this is a historic Victorian period house that was home to the Flavel family. Captain George Flavel was a river bar pilot and respected businessman who made his fortune working on the Columbia River. This house was kept in the family until the 1930s and there was often talk of tearing down the building. Thankfully, it was handed over to the Clatsop County Historical Society back in 1995 and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
When you walk into the building, you will notice the intricate woodworking designs throughout as well as 6 different fireplace mantels. It has 14-foot and 12-foot high ceilings and the whole house covers over 11,000 square feet. The first floor has a library (which is the heart of the house), music room, formal parlor, kitchen, dining room, and conservatory. When you walk up the stairs to the second floor, there are 5 bedrooms, the main bathroom, and a small storage room. The attic floor is an unfinished room that has a 360-degree view of Astoria and the Columbia River. On the outside, the house has a wrap-around porch and the property itself takes up an entire city block. You will also find a carriage house on the Southwest corner which is where the Flavel family kept their carriages and horses back in the day. Now it serves as a visitors center, exhibit hall, and museum store for visitors.
