See the place where the iconic American Gothic painting was inspired.
The American Gothic House and Center are located in southeastern Iowa. Grant Wood saw this house, which inspired him to create the famous American Gothic painting in 1930 in his home in Cedar Rapids. Wood painted a barn off to the side in the painting, but there is no barn by the historic house in real life. Visitors are welcome to take pictures in front of the house and discover more about this place inside the visitor center.
Admission is free for all visitors, but they always welcome donations. Visitor Center hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 4 pm. There are ADA-accessible sidewalks leading to the house, providing a perfect opportunity for photo ops. If you're looking for a fun roadside attraction in rural Iowa, the American Gothic House is the perfect place to see.
