Visit this refuge that is home to hundreds of migratory birds.
The White River flows through this refuge for over 90 miles and provides plenty of opportunities for fishing. Fish species living in the river include sturgeon, herrings, carp, shiners, carpsuckers, catfish, perch, minnows, and bass. There are hundreds of lakes and ponds located throughout this refuge too, bring your binoculars and watch the wildlife creatures in their natural habitats. Animals you may see near these bodies of water include salamanders, frogs, turtles, beavers, ducks, bald eagles, and white-tailed deer. Also, please watch from a distance if you see a black bear; they often come to the lakes for water.
The surrounding bottomland hardwood forest has over 70 tree species and houses a variety of animals and plants. These forest floors do flood depending on the water level, so be wary of alligators and poisonous snakes. It is best not to venture too far from marked trails as you explore this refuge. Early morning or late afternoon hours are the best time to see wildlife if you visit during the summer. Stop by the visitor center to learn more about this rich ecosystem and the wildlife who live within the refuge. The visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and is closed on federal holidays.
