Visit this stunning 150-foot waterfall while driving through White Oak Mountain Road.
The Shunkawauken Falls was named after a Native American chief and can be seen from the road; however, there isn’t a lot of room for you to park or walk along the road since there is no parking lot or overlook platform. This is more of a drive-by kind of waterfall. As you follow the same road a little further, it leads to the Sunset Rock Overlook.
From Columbus, North Carolina, begin at the First Peak Visitor Center for Polk County, then turn right on Houston Road. This road can be reached from the center parking area. Eventually, it will fork right then you will need to turn left on White Oak Mountain Road to reach the falls. It is a very curvy road and isn’t usually that busy during the day. Look for the small pull-off area just before and after the Shunkawauken Falls if you want to get a good picture.
