Visit the museum that honors the life of civil rights activist Rosa Parks.
The Rosa Parks Museum is located in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama, just off of Interstate 65. Its location is significant in itself because the museum stands at the place where Rosa Parks was arrested. This museum strives to honor her legacy and contains significant historical artifacts such as Rosa's original arrest record and a 1950s era city bus. You will learn about the people behind the Montgomery bus boycott and the events, and political views of the city before the civil rights movement began.
After refusing to give up her seat on the bus in 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested. A subsequent boycott began immediately after and didn't end until just over one year later, on December 20, 1956. The boycott was protesting the segregation rules on the city buses, but sadly it took a court ruling for the city to change its mind and stop segregating people of different racial backgrounds on public transportation. Be sure to stop by the Rosa Parks Museum the next time you're in Montgomery, Alabama. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
