The Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge is located off the CanAm Highway in northern New Mexico. This refuge encompasses over 4,000 acres and features a five-mile stretch of the Mora River and scenic desert landscapes full of wildlife. Ecosystems found here include shortgrass prairie, riparian wetlands, and coniferous forests. Bird species that frequent this refuge include osprey, sharp-shinned hawks, black-chinned hummingbirds, golden eagles, wigeons, northern shoveler ducks, and more.
Visitors can take the Juniper Trail to view different parts of the refuge; it is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Spring and fall are the optimal seasons to go bird watching in the Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge, but guests are welcome to explore the area anytime.
