Visit this national monument in northern New Mexico.
The Río Grande del Norte National Monument is located in northern New Mexico. There are several hiking trails to explore here, making it an ideal place to spend time outdoors. The area consists of volcanic cones, wide-open plains, canyons, and rivers. Ute Mountain is the highest volcanic cone, and you can reach it by hiking to the northeastern section of the monument. The Rio Grande River cuts through the entire length of the national monument, and many people also enjoy doing white water rafting here.
Petroglyphs and ancient dwellings provide evidence of human activity in the area, so don't miss out on these neat archaeological sites. Other recreational activities available at this monument include camping, fishing, hunting, camping, mountain biking, and picnicking. This national monument is open year-round, but the visitor center is open between 9 am and 6 pm from Memorial Day through Labor Day. If you're driving around the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, plan on taking a side trip to this national monument.
