See 2,000-year-old cave paintings at this state park.
Pictograph Cave State Park is located in Billings, Montana, and has been a National Historic Landmark since the 1960s. This park features three different caves that show evidence of an ancient civilization dating back at least 2,100 years ago. Archaeologists started the excavation of these caves back in the 1930s, and tens of thousands of artifacts and other remains have been found here since. The three caves are named Pictograph Cave, Middle Cave, and Ghost Cave. Out of the three caves, Pictograph is the largest one and has the oldest painting of a turtle, which is estimated to be over 2,000 years old.
This scenic spot is perfect for spending the day with friends and family. The short interpretive trail leads to the caves, and there are many picnic facilities to sit at and take in the gorgeous Montana scenery. Birding is another popular pastime at this park. You are likely to see birds such as ospreys, bald eagles, prairie falcons, and mountain bluebirds. Pictograph Cave State Park is an ideal combination for outdoor and history lovers.
