Visit this stunning natural monument along the banks of Yellowstone River.
Pompeys Pillar National Monument is a natural sandstone monument located 25 miles east of Billings, Montana. It is accessible by Interstate 94 off exit 23 onto State Highway 312. The pillar is about 120 feet tall and is the only sandstone monument in the area. Stop by the nearby pillar lookout point, which has been used for over 11,000 years. Here you will find petroglyphs that were documented by the Lewis and Clark expedition. Travelers are welcome to visit the monument for a small fee.
The access road to the monument is only open from May through October. There is also an interpretive center which is open from 9 am to 6 pm during those months. Reservations during the off-season are available upon request. The center is fully ADA-accessible. Many visitors come to the monument and enjoy a picnic while they are here. Many guests use the opportunity to watch wildlife, hike, see historic landmarks, and enjoy the beauty of the area. Pets are welcome outside but must be on a leash at all times.
