Tour this Gilded Age mansion in upstate New York.
The Phelps Mansion Museum is located in downtown Binghampton, New York, between the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers. This historic mansion was built in 1871 and was the home of Sherman David Phelps, a prominent businessman and mayor of Binghampton. Lavish New Year's Eve parties were often held at this home in the late 1800s. Phelps also owned properties on either side of him on Court Street, but the most beautiful of the three homes was this mansion.
Guided tours of the Phelps Mansion are available Friday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. Each tour lasts one hour and they encourage guests to book tours at least 24 hours in advance. Inside, there is a grand staircase, and several rooms on the first floor, including a library, dining room, solarium, and parlor. You will see several historic paintings, fireplaces, large mirrors, period furniture, and chandeliers as you tour the Phelps Mansion, giving you a sense of how the wealthy lived in the 1870s.
