This historic home was once an important station along the Underground Railroad.
The Lovejoy Homestead, or the Owen Lovejoy House, is situated in Princeton, Illinois, and it is the historic home that once belonged to the well-known abolitionist, reverend, and congressman known as Owen Lovejoy. The house was built in 1838 and was once one of the most important stations along the Underground Railroad, and today it’s considered a National Historic Landmark. He was passionate and outspoken about supporting fugitive slaves. Lovejoy made a huge impact on not only the state of Illinois but also the country through his dedicated work in politics.
Visitors can explore the restored home that reflects how it was likely designed in the mid-19th century. This historic home is open to guests from May through September on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 4. Come learn about the remarkable life of Owen Lovejoy and all he accomplished during his life by visiting the place he inhabited for nearly 30 years.
