Grand Portage State Park is located in the northeastern corner of Minnesota. It features Minnesota's tallest waterfall, High Falls, which plummets 120 feet down. Walk along the 1/2-mile boardwalk trail that leads to an overlook area for an unobstructed view of the falls. Wildlife creatures in the area include deer, black bears, osprey, eagles, otters, beavers, moose, and more. The mixed hardwood forest within the park is home to various small birds and other animals. Another park feature is the Pigeon River, where you may see great blue herons wading in the water.
This state park is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm. Camping is prohibited, so this state park is a day-use-only area. Grand Portage State Park is a great place to have a picnic. There are plenty of picnic tables near the visitor center available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you walk along the picnic trail, you will eventually reach the international border marker between the U.S. and Canada. The Grand Portage Lodge (6-miles away from the park) has a local restaurant for anyone wanting to go inside for a hot meal.
