Visit Alabama's old capital city.
Old Cahawba Archaeological Park is situated near the Alabama River, southwest of Selma, Alabama. This riverside community quickly became a ghost town after the American Civil War. The area was notoriously prone to flooding, and the capital was moved to Tuscaloosa back in 1826. Due to the large number of natural resources available, the town did thrive for a while. During its prime, there were about 3,000 residents of Cahawba.
The park grounds are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and the visitor center is open Thursday through Monday from 10 am to 5 pm. You will see several ruins and historic buildings during your visit. One of the buildings is an old episcopal church that is over 150 years old. Nature has reclaimed most of the town, so the abandoned streets offer a scenic stroll through the area. If you enjoy seeking out the road less traveled, a visit to Old Cahawba Archaeological Park should be on your list of places to see in Alabama.
