See the remains of century-old trees and discover the mysteries of this ancient forest.
Take a self-guided tour along the paved nature trail and learn about the ancient forest that once stood here. There are countless petrified logs to see along the nature trail, including "Caveman's Bench," a petrified tree that many stop at for pictures. This shady trail is just over a quarter of a mile long. Be sure to explore the Earth Science Museum, where you can see a large display of fossils and examples of petrified wood from every state.
The Mississippi Petrified Forest is located northwest of Jackson. This beautiful area also features campsites for tents and RVs. Choose from 11 full hook-up RV sites or one of their secluded tent campsites and enjoy sleeping under the stars in the Mississippi woods. Leashed pets are welcome here, so bring your furry friends with you if you like.
A large covered pavilion is also available for rent and is ideal for large gatherings during the day. The pavilion has running water and electricity and is large enough to accommodate around 200 people. Group discounts (for 15+ people) are available upon request. The Mississippi Petrified Forest is open year-round except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. From April 1 to Labor Day, hours are 9 am to 6 pm, and Labor Day to April 1 is open from 9 am to 5 pm.
