This state park is located on the largest American island in Lake Erie that was formed by retreating glaciers during the last ice age.
Out in the vast waters of Lake Erie is the largest American island, Kelleys Island. Kelleys Island State Park covers a quarter of the island and serves as a phenomenal place to retreat into nature and partake in pretty much any outdoor pastime imaginable. The park boasts woodlands, scenic shoreline, and magnificent geological features, so there is plenty to discover here as well as incredible backdrops for photographers who visit. The island was formed by glacial activity during the last ice age; on the island’s north side, there are extraordinary grooves carved into the limestone bedrock from the retreating glaciers. The park even has an intriguing history, as there’s evidence that ancient civilizations once called this island home.
There’s a beach near the campground that’s perfect for swimming, basking in the sun, and picnicking. Other favorite activities include hiking and biking the 9 miles of trails that wind through the diverse ecosystems, fishing (Lake Erie is known as the “Walleye Capital of the World”), camping, and cross-country skiing and ice fishing in the winter. There are a number of privately operated ferries that can get you to the island, or you can take your own boat over if you’re able. Kelleys Island State Park is a place to appreciate geological wonders, outdoor activities, and the peace and quiet only nature can provide.
