The Bryn Du Mansion sits on 52 acres of land and was originally constructed in 1865 and boasts 52 rooms and 12 fireplaces! In total, there are 8 buildings on the grounds, including a field house, gardener’s cottage, and horse barn. Over the years, various owners and architects have renovated and made additions to the property until the result became the one we know and love today. Bryn Du means “Black Hill” in Welsh, which pays homage to the ancestry of one of the mansion’s owners.
A variety of exciting events are held at the Bryn Du Mansion today, such as sporting events, concerts, lectures, and art shows. The property is managed by the Bryn Du Commission, and their aim is to preserve the incredible history embedded here while facilitating community-centered events and programs. While tours of this amazing property are only available by appointment, the art programs and other events are held frequently and make the opportunity to visit Bryn Du very accessible. The village of Granville is filled with so much history, and this mansion that’s been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since the 1980s should not be missed out on.
