Take a step back in time at this historic village in upstate New York.
The Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes is located off of Interstate 86 in northwestern New York. It is comprised of several buildings dating back to the 1800s. A great place to start is at the Painted Post, which tells the history of Erwin and features educational exhibits. The oldest building on site is the 1796 Benjamin Patterson Inn, one of the oldest taverns in the eastern United States that is still standing. At the Inn, guests will see the taproom, dining room, kitchen, guest quarters, and a ballroom which now displays old textile equipment.
Be sure to stop by the kitchen and herb garden to see historic gardening techniques that the local gardening guild still uses. There is also an interactive farming exhibit at the Starr Barn. Here, you can meet the horse, cow, and chickens and learn about farm life in the mid-1800s. The Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes is currently open for guided tours on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday by reservation only.
