One of Block Island's most significant natural features with fun and recreation in and around the water.
The Great Salt Pond is a hub for pleasure boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. It is located along the western shore of Block Island. The Great Salt Pond expands for about 1.2 miles southeast to a smaller pond that is known as Inner Harbor. Inner Harbor is the location of the local fishing fleet and a base during the spring and summer. Visitors can bring a boat or rent equipment like kayaks and paddleboards. The water is like glass and makes for a great place to cool off. The beaches are beautiful and the whole area is scenic and relaxing with the views and the waves lapping on the shore. The Pond is a huge estuary with both fresh and saltwater creatures and flora coexisting. There is a lot of wildlife to view, such as herons. There are some commercial properties on some of the shoreline here, such as restaurants, bars, and marinas, and some natural areas and residential areas. Visitors can fish, clam, boat, paddle, swim, or kayak. It is a beautiful and fun way to spend a few hours, the day, or even longer.
