Vessels entering the East Passage between Conanicut Island & Aquidneck Island have relied on this lighthouse for many years and still do to this day. Its surrounding property belonged to Alexander Agassiz of Harvard University. Agassiz was a naturalist, oceanographer, and zoologist, and he eventually sold the land to the United States Government for just one dollar. The mansion on the property was built in 1874 and is now known as Castle Inn. If you love historic sites, visit the Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island.
