Tour the grounds and mansion of this Vanderbilt estate.
The Breakers is the former summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt ll, constructed during the late 1800s. The mansion was designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt based on the Italian Renaissance style. The 70 room mansion is 125,339 square feet with five floors. This estate covers a total of 14 acres on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A 12-foot high limestone and iron fence borders the property on all sides, except for the ocean view. There is a stable and carriage house approximately a half-mile west of the house as well, and the entrance is marked with sculpted iron gates on Ochre Point Avenue.
The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1994 and is now owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County. The estate and mansion are open for visitors year-round. Admission times are from 10 am to 4 pm. Tours are self-guided with audio explanations of different parts of the home available on the Newport Mansions app. Papers with a scripted tour are available for those without smart devices.
