Lucknow, also known as the Castle in the Clouds, is a mansion in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. The estate encompasses 5,500 acres on Lee Mountain and overlooks Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains. It was built in 1913 by Thomas Plant for his wife, Olive Cornelia Dewey. Thomas Plant made his millions by owning the largest shoe factory in the world. When he was 51, Plant sold his business and retired, heading to Europe where he fell in love with Olive and built this beautiful Castle in the Clouds. The mansion was built with state-of-the-art amenities, including an interphone system and a central vacuum system. Lucknow mansion features the Arts and Crafts architectural style, meaning it was designed specifically to be in harmony with nature.
The mansion has 16 rooms, a six-car garage, a greenhouse, plus tennis and golf courses, a boathouse, a manufactured lake, and more. Visitors are welcome to eat at the on-site restaurant, explore the hiking trails, relax at the picnic areas and waterfalls, go horseback riding, and do other recreational activities. Please note that the only way to the mansion is by trolley. Trolleys depart from the Carriage House every 15 minutes, and there is a trail leading downhill from the lakeside lawn back to the Carriage House if visitors prefer to walk back down.
