Blue Sky (artist) created two grand art pieces: a mural dedicated to the town of Columbia's history and more notably: the world's largest fire hydrant.
Built to withstand the direct hit of a tornado is the world’s largest fire hydrant. Warren Edward Johnson, known in the artistic world as Blue Sky, constructed the hydrant over the course of a few months and hid his project with a giant tarp. The hydrant was unveiled on February 18th, 2001 during a twenty-fifth-anniversary celebration of Blue sky’s famous mural: Tunnelvision. This date also holds significance to the Columbian downfall in the US Civil War. Originally debuted as a working fountain, the hydrant stands forty feet tall and weighs 675,000 pounds. Both the hydrant and the mural can be seen from the Busted Plug Plaza and hails as a popular photo opportunity. Water used to spurt from the base but it was turned off recently to preserve the statue. This piece is also featured in Disney’s live-action movie 101 Dalmatians.
