Take a stop along Route 66 at this unique motel.
Route 66 is full of many budget-friendly, historical stops. This is a quick and easy drive-by photo opportunity, which also offers a more in-depth experience by spending the night inside a wigwam. A wigwam is a structure that Native Americans often used to create small dwellings for their families. (Teepees are similar in structure but are more for travel and temporary use, while wigwams use heavier and sturdier materials).
Frank Redford officially opened his first wigwam village in 1949, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The outside structure resembles the classic Route 66 vibe but offers modernized rooms, a pool, and Wifi. The property is set against palm trees and is within a short distance to many attractions in San Bernardino, California.
The Wigwam Motel has since become a chain, opening up 6 different locations. It also was part of the inspiration for The Cozy Cone Motel in the animated movie Cars.
