This unique mountain range is known for its striking volcanic peaks and jagged canyons.
The Superstition Mountain is a large mountain that many visitors and residents of the Phoenix area visit for recreational activities such as hiking, climbing, and landscape photography. Originally, this mountain range was called Sierra de la Espuma (which means Foam Mountains in Spanish). The Superstition Mountain range is located within the federally designated Superstition Wilderness Area. It has a variety of natural features, such as Weavers Needle.
Besides the Grand Canyon, the Superstition Mountain range is the most photographed and painted landmark in Arizona. Because the farmers in the area believed the Pumas' were superstitious about the mountain, the name Superstition Mountain was born. Over 100 years ago, the Native Americans and some prospectors walked along the miles of the striking desert wilderness and scenic splendor. The volcanic cliffs rise 2,000 feet high and hide the Lost Dutchman Mine from view.
Since Superstition Mountain is situated in a desert climate, expect to experience high temperatures in the summer while hiking here. Numerous hiking trails pass through the mountain range at various access points. The most popular trail is the Peralta Trailhead. On the west side of the Superstition Mountain, you can visit The Lost Dutchman State Park, which features several short walking trails to explore.
