The Stax Museum of American Soul Music preserves the incredible history of the soul music that was recorded here between 1957 and 1975.
The Stax Museum of American Soul Music, which used to be the location for the legendary Stax Records studio, can be found in Memphis, Tennessee. This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of soul music and honoring the many people that recorded here over the years since 1957. Artists such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Johnnie Taylor, and Rufus and Carla Thomas are commemorated at Stax. The museum is run by the Soulsville Foundation, which also manages the Stax Music Academy and the Soulsville Charter School, which help uplift and mentor at-risk youth while providing them with an incredible education that’s centered around music.
At Stax Museum, guests have the chance to see a historically significant church that has been reassembled for the establishment and dates back to 1906, a groovy dance floor to let loose on, recording equipment that was used at Stax Records back in the day, Isaac Haye’s one-of-a-kind Cadillac, and the remarkable Wall of Sound, which is a wall that is comprised of the records that were released through Stax Records between 1957 and 1975. The museum is closed on Monday, but open from 10-5 the rest of the week. Entry costs $13 for adults, $12 for seniors, military personnel, and students, $10 for those aged 9-12, and free for members and children that are 8 and under.
