Smith Falls State Park is located in Valentine, Nebraska. This waterfall is named after Frederick Smith, the first homestead owner of the falls. The area officially became a state park in 1992. The scenic Smith Falls State Park is home to the highest waterfall in the state at 70 feet tall, accessible via the walking bridge. Hiking to the falls is limited to prevent excessive erosion and protect the surrounding plants. Smith Falls State Park is also home to biological species dating back to the ice age era.
Visitors are attracted to the falls for its beautiful scenic view along with the 76-mile stretch of Niobrara River. This area is popular for kayaking, tubing, canoeing, camping, and more. Float trips can take up to 2- 6 hours long. Watercraft rentals are available through different vendors located in Valentine City. Basic tent camping is available along the north side of the Niobrara River. Campground amenities include restrooms, pay showers, picnic tables, reservable group sites, and pavilions. Reservations can be made by phone or online. All visitors must check-in at the park office upon arrival, as a park permit is required. A visitor center is also located in the state park and has helpful information that you may need. Other nearby attractions include the Cowboy Recreation Area and a 195-mile Nature Trail, perfect for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and more.
