Merritt Reservoir State Recreational Area is located in Cherry County, Nebraska. It spans 2,906 acres, is 11 miles long, and has a shoreline of 44 miles. Located 26 miles southwest of Valentine, you will find this recreational area in the north-central part of the state. This deepwater lake is feed by the Snake River and Boardman Creek. The lake's most favorable actives include boating, fishing, hunting, camping, and more. All forms of boats, from paddles to motors, are allowed here. Five ramps and seven docks are located on the lake. An ADA-accessible ramp is also available.
Merritt Reservoir is home to a variety of fish and is a prime fishing area. Expect to find walleye, crappie, bass, angler, and Lunker catfish. Hunting is also a popular activity and hunting season opens the day after Labor Day. Popular animals to hunt include prairie grouse, wild turkey, whitetail, and mule deer. Camping accommodations are plentiful in the region surrounding the reservoir. Campgrounds include Beads Landing, Boardman, and Cedar Bay. You can book campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs. They offer full hookups, a sewage dump, modern showers, and bathrooms. About half of the campsites require reservations; others are on a first-come, first-served basis. Nightly reservations are located at the ranger station, check or cash only accepted.
Merrit Reservoir State Recreation Area also has over 200 picnic tables with 190 picnic areas that have grills. This is a pristine area to enjoy the scenery and spend time with family and friends. In addition, you can find the Merrit Trading Post outside the park. It is a private resort but contains helpful information, maps, restaurants, bait, food, cabin rentals, and more.
