Come to the "Grand Canyon" of Texas.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located in northern Texas and is part of the second-largest canyon system in the United States. This canyon system is 120 miles long, 20 miles wide, and 800 feet deep. The geologic rock layers are over 250 million years old and feature Hoodoo formations and rich plant life on the canyon floors created by the flood river plains. Plantlife consists of shortgrass prairie, cottonwood trees, soapberries, wildflowers, sunflowers, blackfoot daisies, and sage. The Palo Duro Mouse is a local endangered species. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as coyotes, bobcats, mule deer, wild turkeys, and various birds.
This park opened to the public in 1934 and features 30 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Other popular activities include bird watching and nature studies. Palo Duro Canyon State Park features several campsites with electricity and water hookups, plus primitive camping areas. Camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Glamping sites, cabins, and RV sites are also available. The park is open year-round and gate hours are from 7:30 am - 6 pm Sunday through Thursday. On weekends, the gate is open from 7:30 am to 7 pm. If you're driving towards Oklahoma, don't hesitate to stop by Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
