Explore this impressive state house in Little Rhody.
The Rhode Island State House is one of the grandest statehouses in the United States, and it is hard to miss because it is located heart of downtown Providence. McKim, Mead, and White were the firm that designed this building, they are the same architectural firm that designed the Boston Public Library in 1895 and made renovations to the White House in 1902. Check out the museum, which displays the Colonial Charter granted in 1663 by King Charles ll of England, guaranteeing religious liberty.
On the top of the State House dome is Rhode Island's Independent Man statue, which represents the spirit of freedom, thought, and action. The building is impressive inside and out and is full of marble and artwork. The library takes up three stories, and guests will also get to admire various murals and paintings of the previous state governors. Another historical artifact on display is a cannon used at Gettysburg and an original painting of George Washington completed by Gilbert Stuart, a Rhode Island native.
