Tour a coastal lighthouse dating back to the late 1800s.
Albert Dow designed Pomham Rocks Lighthouse. It was first lit on December 1, 1871, and featured seven rooms and a 42-foot tower. This is still an operational lighthouse that is still in use for navigational purposes. You have to take a boat to get to the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse; these boat rides take about 20 minutes one way. Personal watercraft like canoes and kayaks are not allowed in the bay.
Several exhibits are on display on the first and second floors of the lighthouse. You can also check out the restoration exhibit in the cellar to see pictures of the multi-year restoration project that occurred here. Guided tours of the lighthouse take two hours. They recommend having sunscreen, a light jacket, water, and rubber-soled shoes for the tour. At the end of the tour, you'll get to climb the stairs up the tower and take in views of Narragansett Bay. Explore this historical lighthouse with your friends and family the next time you visit Rhode Island.
