Immerse yourself in the 28-acres of pure natural beauty on the coast of Rhode Island when you visit the Claire D. McIntosh Wildlife Refuge. The Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is located on the refuge, so after you’ve taken some time to explore there, you can head outside and put your newfound knowledge of this region’s plant and wildlife species to the test! Embark on the 1-mile trail that is ADA certified accessible and features a boardwalk that leads through saltwater marshes, forest, expansive fields, shoreline, and to a pristine viewpoint of Narragansett Bay.
Visitors will of course have plenty of opportunities to spot all sorts of wildlife while exploring the refuge. This land is home to species such as painted and snapping turtles, muskrats, foxes, osprey, red-tailed hawks, and green herons. This is truly a birder’s paradise with all the native and migratory species that spend time here, so definitely don’t forget your binoculars! During the winter months, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and when it’s warm enough out, there are several picnic tables perfect for a scenic meal and bikers can head out on the 14.5-mile East Bay Bike Path. The Claire D. McIntosh Wildlife Refuge is the location of so many important nature programs and is an incredible place to explore, birdwatch, and take in the gorgeous scenery of The Ocean State.
