This museum takes you through an asylum that ran over 130 years ago.
Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health is a historic mental hospital located in the Salem area. Hundreds of people were sent here to receive treatment for their mental illnesses. Keep in mind that the understanding of mental illnesses was relatively unexplored back in that time. You will learn about the peculiar methods used to treat patients and walk the halls and rooms where scientists were performing experiments.
The Academy Award Winning movie "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest” was filmed in this old asylum. This is a unique museum where you can learn about the true stories of those who used to live and work here. A non-profit organization runs the museum, and they welcome donations. General admission is $7, and children under 10 are free. Visitors are allowed to take photos and videos inside the museum for personal use only.
