Explore this unique hiking trail featuring old, rusted vehicles and farming equipment.
Jawbone Flats is a part of the 24,000 acres comprising the Opal Creek Wilderness area. Currently, parts of this forest are closed due to damage from recent wildfires. Typically, there are eight accessible trails, with this trailhead (Opal Creek) being the most popular. The town near the trailhead offers cabins for those wishing to stay the night. There is an old Jeep track you can take on the drive up as well.
Along the trail, hikers may come across old rusting trucks, cars, and other old vehicles. Old mining equipment and other tools are also found here and there. Leashed dogs are allowed on this 6.9-mile out-and-back hike. There is a $5 (cash or check) parking fee, with a station located 20 minutes from the step off point. This is a unique hike in Oregon that you won't want to miss.
