Constructed in 1808, Old Fort Jackson is Georgia’s oldest brick fort that still stands today. Before the Civil War, its original purpose was to act as a defense system, and it was actually utilized during the War of 1812. It is minutes away from downtown Savannah, Georgia, and is situated right next to the Savannah River. They hold daily cannon demonstrations at the fort and offer other interactive exhibits so guests can come and see history in action.
Admission is very affordable for all ages. This is a great place where you can learn about early military weaponry and war tactics used back in the day. The fort is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm, excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. If you are in the area, Old Fort Jackson is a great place for history buffs, groups, and families who are passing through.
