Discover the integral relationship between the railroad and mining industries.
The Northern Pacific Railroad Museum will take you back in time when the railroad industry was booming. Traveling by railroad was the newest and fastest way to travel in the 1800s, and the Northern Pacific Museum can take you there. Upon entering the museum, you will see that it was created to look like a railroad station. Here you can learn about how the railroad made an impact on the Coeur d’Alene mining district. The main material that was mined here back in the day was silver.
The Northern Pacific Depot was built in 1901. This was a booming and busy depot for years and helped the area to grow and prosper. In later years, Interstate 90 was built, which connected Coeur d’Alene with Montana, Washington, and Southern Idaho. The last train that serviced this station was the Union Pacific in July of 1994. Even though the train depot is no longer in service, this museum stands as a memoir of those old mining days when train services were crucial for this town to survive. Discover the vital role that these train services played in this region of Northern Idaho.
