Visit a historic house museum that was built in 1808.
The Nathaniel Russell House is very historic! The home was built in 1808 by a wealthy merchant and slave trader named Nathaniel Russell. The home is an essential display of a neoclassical house in America and was made a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The home is known for its amazing 3-story spiral staircase and has 30,490 square feet of space. Visitors enjoy seeing the interesting plasterwork, the geometrically shaped rooms, and the fine art displayed throughout. This house museum is in the heart of downtown Charleston and offers guided tours. The house has been fully restored very close to its 1808 appearance and is surrounded by formal gardens. The fabulous tours show visitors about the structure, inform them about the time it was built, and illuminate the lives of the people who worked and lived at the property.
The Nathaniel Russell House is open daily from 10 am - 5 pm with the last tour beginning at 4:15 pm. Most visitors spend about 2 hours in the house and on the grounds enjoying the grandeur of the home and the beautiful gardens. The tour admission for adults is $15, $7 for children ages 6 -16, and children 6 and under get in for free!
