Visit this historic military site that was built to protect Charleston, South Carolina.
Fort Moultrie is the first and oldest still-standing fort along the Eastern Seaboard and was built from logs and sand. This is a historic military site with a series of fortifications and ammunition bunkers that run along the coast. It was previously named Fort Sullivan. The Battle of Fort Sullivan was the first big American victory of the Revolutionary War. After that battle, the fort was renamed Fort Moultrie in honor of the commander, Colonel William Moultrie! This fort is so special because of the history, the exhibits, the artifacts, and the movie at the visitor center. The beach is just a few hundred yards away, so spending time there is a must during a visit, as well. The grounds are well preserved and walking around the property, within the buildings, and underground is very interesting. They have tour guides, but visitors can also explore themselves. Don't miss a visit to General Moultrie's gravesite which is located across the road from the fort just behind the visitor center.
The fort and visitor center is accessible by car and open daily from 9 am - 5 pm. Admission for adults - is $10 and those 15 and under are free to enter. Don't miss out on this amazing and well-preserved historical fort!
