Learn about the gold rush at this historic park.
Sutter Mill, located in Coloma, California, is part of the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. John Sutter built this historic sawmill along with his partner James. Its original purpose was to be a functional water-powered sawmill, but the discovery of gold flakes resulted in a completely different outcome. Thousands came to the area hoping to strike rich. Sutter’s Mill is rich not just with gold but rich in historical heritage. This historical site is a key component of Western development. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 did not result just in the discovery of gold but also caused a great migration West. It eventually resulted in the development of California and the start of a new era.
A replica of Sutter Mill sits next to the South Fork American River. The replica is one of twenty historical buildings at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. It features some original buildings as well as replicas. You will also see a visitor center museum, gift shop, James Marshall Monument, costumed volunteers, and more. Weather permitting, visitors can participate in gold discovery tours, offered twice daily. Enjoy special events planned throughout the year, such as gold panning lessons. Group reservations are required. This historic state park is open for day use only from 8 am to 5 pm. Small entrance fees and parking fees apply. Take part in the historic gold rush era and see what it was like back in the day.
