Explore this specialty cheese shop located inside a medieval castle.
Mars Cheese Castle is located just a few miles north of the Illinois state line, marking your arrival in Wisconsin. This is a unique and historically rich cheese specialty store. Established in 1947 by Mario Ventura, the store is well-loved by locals, tourists, and even celebrates people such as Johnny Cash. In 1957, the castle burned down but was swiftly rebuilt twice as large and introduced a deli, where shoppers could order a variety of sandwiches, bakery items, and alcoholic beverages.
You will notice that the castle has battlements, a turret, moat, ramparts, and a mock draw bridge. The design for the shop was inspired by the castle that Ventura's mother owned in Italy. It is tough to miss, especially with the new 80-foot tall sign. It offers an inviting, friendly, and welcoming atmosphere where guests can buy cheeses, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and souvenirs. This is a unique spot that is sure to bring a smile to your face. It is open every day from 9 am to 7 pm. This castle is a cheese lover’s dream. Feel free to stop by during your road trip through the Midwest.
