Enjoy this popular lake featuring a great beach and plenty of places to fish.
Lake Alvin State Recreation Area covers 59 acres of land. Lake Alvin has plenty of room for visitors to go boating, fishing, and swimming. There are walleye, northern pike, crappie, sunfish, perch, catfish, and bullhead fish. The lake reaches about 21 feet deep in certain areas, and it was formed due to the construction of a dam across the lower end of Nine Mile Creek. It was named after Alvin Dempeworf, the only World War soldier from Harrisburg that died overseas. The dam was completed in August of 1954 and the lake was completely filled in by 1957.
The lake was designated as a no-wake zone to protect the shoreline from erosion. Boats must not go faster than 5 mph or produce a visible wake. The main focus of Lake Alvin Recreation Area is for water recreation. It is a popular gathering place with picnic shelters and hiking trails. Many visitors enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming by the beach. Come here for fun in the sun with your friends and family.
