Explore this sacred area featuring an ancient pipestone quarry.

Pipestone National Monument is located in southwestern Minnesota, where countless generations of Native Americans have quarried red pipestone. This material was later carved into pipes that were used for prayer. Many people believe that the pipe's smoke carries that person's prayer to the Great Spirit. Visitors will learn about the history and meaning of this place when they visit. The Monument also has picnic tables, a visitor center, walking trails, and restrooms available for visitors. You can participate in a guided tour and hear stories about Pipestone's history, learn about the cultural and natural resources in the area, attend night sky viewings, and engage in interactive archeology programs while you're here. Don't skip out on the gift shop before you leave; it is a Native-owned store with unique souvenirs, and it showcases a big peace pipe at the front of the store.

For centuries, tribes across North America traveled to this site and still continue the tradition today. Pipestone National Monument is a valuable spiritual resource for many. The Pipestone National Monument is a beautiful park where you can take a nice, leisurely walk. Oftentimes, you can see people working in the Pipestone quarry and the carving area. The Circle Trail is a paved path that is 3/4 of a mile long. This trail goes through Tall Grass Prairie along Pipestone Creek, which leads to the beautiful Winnewissa Falls waterfall. There are many indoor interpretive exhibits at the visitor center, and you can also watch a 22-minute film explaining the cultural and spiritual significance of the site. Anyone is welcome to visit this national monument from April through October. If you're driving through the midwest, be sure to add Pipestone National Monument to your itinerary.
