Visit the site of two early Amerian utopian communities.
New Harmony Historic Site is located in southwest Indiana and is comprised of 20,000-acres. The land was first purchased by Geroge Rapp in 1804 then bought by Robert Owen along with William Maclure. The founders hoped to create a perfect model community in America. Following the Christian perfection with education and social equality in women's rights, and education in geology, naturalism, and sociology. Despite hard work and determination, the model community dissolved in 1827. Although dissolved, the impact made on American society still remains. Early construction techniques and preservations of the heritage provide a unique experience into the life of the earliest community here in New Harmony.
Visitors can come and participate in guided tours. New Harmony provides a historic charm while providing modern conveniences. There are 108 historic log and brick buildings that still stand today. Another high-interest point is the dizzying labyrinth garden. The garden has a natural canopy of high trees and hedges, creating a private stunning beauty. The second point of interest is the home of Miss Mary Emily Fauntleroy. Mary would play the harp and tell stories to her guests when she lived here.
The New Harmony printing press, including the original equipment, is displayed in exhibits on the third floor of the visitor center. Other buildings that provided self-sustaining trade work are also available to tour. The Opera House is a precious experience as the building played many contributions to the community. Trained tour guides provide all tours. Tours are offered from March 16 through October 31, Tuesday through Sunday at 1 pm. Tours are about 2 hours or more in length. They start at the Atheneum Visitor Center, where participants will start with a film then walk through exhibits. All participants will be given access to numerous historical sites. Come and take a tour today!
