A scenic train ride that will take you around the Deer Creek Reservoir and surrounding areas.
The Heber Valley Historic Railroad (nicknamed the Heber Creeper) takes guests on an authentic train ride. During the trip, there are snacks and restrooms available. At certain times of the year, there are special events such as the North Pole Express during the Christmas season, the Pumpkin train in October, Hot Summer Night train rides in August and September, Wild West Days in May, and even a Valentine's Special in February. Every Monday night they have discounted prices that are a great option for large families.
There are 3 different scenic routes for the Heber Creeper, the Deer Creek Express, Lakeside Limited, and Provo Canyon Limited. The Deer Creek Express is a 90-minute ride that follows the shores of the Deer Creek Reservoir and has some great views of the Wasatch Mountains. If you take the Lakeside Limited train, it is a 2-hour long ride you will again go around Deer Creek Reservoir and up to the base of Mount Timpanogos. The Provo Canyon Limited ride takes you the furthest distance and brings you to Vivian Park which is located along the Provo River. They give you a 20-minute layover at the park before heading back, but if you want a one-way ticket to get dropped off at Vivian Park, that is also an option. It is just over an hour train ride one way. If you want to purchase a lunch ticket along with your train ticket, that is available as well but must be ordered 24 hours prior to your departure time. Lunches include a deli meat sandwich of your choice, a bag of chips, a cookie, and bottled water.
Since 2014, Heber Valley Railroad has been working on a project to restore their number 618 steam locomotive train. It is currently a coal-fired train but they are accepting donations to help retrofit it to become an oil-burning locomotive.
