Visit an old military outpost, historic lighthouses, and enjoy the great outdoors at this state park in northern Michigan.
Fort Wilkins was established in 1844 and was built to keep law and order during the Copper Rush. The fort has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970. Once inside, guests can learn the history of the northern frontier during the mid-1800s. If you like sightseeing, be sure to visit the Copper Harbor lighthouses before you leave. These lighthouses were built in 1866 and 1868 and were among the first lighthouses on the shores of Lake Superior. If you want to plan an extended stay, you can reserve one of their campsites or cabins online.
The fort is open daily from 8:30 am to sunset. Day use facilities include picnic tables, a playground, an ADA-accessible fishing pier, and a small store. Feel free to explore the 4-mile Fort Wilkins Foot Trail and keep an eye out for birds and other wildlife in the area. If you're traveling along Michigan's Upper Peninsula, be sure to add Fort Wilkins State Park to your itinerary.
