Go bird watching at the Neosho River Valley wetlands.
The Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge is located in eastern Kansas off Interstate 35. This national wildlife refuge features wetlands, bottomland hardwood forests, and grasslands, prime locations for migratory birds to rest. Bird species that frequent the area include mallard ducks, wigeons, snow geese, wild turkeys, white pelicans, sandpipers, great blue herons, and even bald eagles. Head to the northeastern part of the refuge and park at Burgess Trail to see the birds in the marshlands. Another wildlife viewing platform is on the southeastern end of the refuge, adjacent to the reservoir.
Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge encompasses nearly 18,500 acres of space and preserves the natural habitats that migratory birds desperately need to survive. Please respect the wildlife and do not attempt to pet or feed them. With 15 different parking spots, you can easily spend an entire afternoon walking and driving to see different regions of the refuge. If you enjoy bird watching, be sure to add Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge to your list of places to see in Kansas.
