Ride a vintage steam engine train and enjoy views of West Virginia's mountains.
The town of Cass was founded in 1901 by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. It was a company town for the loggers who worked in the nearby mountains back in its heyday. Railroad construction in the area also started in 1901 and was used to haul lumber to the mill in Cass. The tracks eventually reached the top of Bald Knob, the third-highest mountain peak in West Virginia. The mill and railroad were shut down in 1960 due to the rapid decline of the timber industry in the region, and shortly thereafter, the railroad and town were restored and brought into the park system. Today, the railroad is in full operation for the enjoyment of its visitors.
Take a ride on a scenic train ride up to the peak of Bald Knob or Whittaker Station Tuesday through Sunday from $35-$65 per person, depending on the experience you book. Spend an enchanting night in a caboose car that is picked up and dropped off in the mountains and then picked up again the next day for $330 per night. The schedule for pick up and drop off times is determined by the Durbin Rocket train. There are locally run restaurants, tours of Cass, and shopping for handmade goods available within the park. Several hiking trails, as well as other state parks and forests, are nearby.
