Explore nature at this southern Louisiana wildlife refuge.
The Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is located just south of Lake Charles, Louisiana. This refuge covers over 9,000 acres of land and features habitats such as freshwater marshes and coastal prairies. Anglers can fish off of Bank Fish Road or the Outfall Canal. Common fish species are largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill. Be watchful of alligators, they also live in the rivers and canals at the refuge.
Common birds you may see include the roseate spoonbill, northern pintails, ring-necked ducks, snow geese, mottled ducks, herons, kestrels, ospreys, bald eagles, and more. As you walk around, you may also see mammals such as deer, rabbits, raccoons, otters, opossums, and various rodents. If you're traveling through southern Louisiana, this national wildlife refuge is a great place to enjoy bird watching and it is a peaceful area where you can get away from large crowds.
