Built in the 1930s, visit this historic landmark in the emerald city.
The Blue Moon Tavern is an important historical landmark for Seattle, as it is one of the first and oldest Taverns in the University district. Established in 1934, the Blue Moon Tavern was one of the only places for university students to get drinks. And to make matters worse, due to laws that were established at the time, the students had to travel a mile to get there. While the students were surely excited to be there, it wasn't just a haven for them. Professors often took refuge there and used it as a study hall of sorts. It wasn't uncommon to find a professor at the bar, using it as a desk back in the day.
Many Seattle writers found the Tavern as a fantastic spot to sit and spitball ideas in their notebooks. Given these descriptions, we can assume that the Tavern was less of a loud frat boy place and more of a quiet and laid back tavern, where one could go to escape for a time. In 1999, there was a movement from the city to tear it down and replace it with condos and office spaces. The notion was instantly met with unhappy shouts from the community. The Blue Moon Tavern is a historical treasure, filled with stories and imagination, and it will most likely continue to stay for years to come. It is open daily from 6 am to 3 pm.
