Explore this refuge that is home to over 300 migratory bird species throughout the year.
The Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge is located off of Interstate 10 in eastern New Orleans. It features a bottomland hardwood forest, marshes, bayous, and natural habitats for migratory birds. One of the best places for birding is at the Joe Madere Marsh Overlook. Common birds you may see include mottled ducks, brown pelicans, double-crested cormorants, great egrets, bald eagles, laughing gulls, great blue herons, blue jays, mourning doves, belted kingfishers, and more.
This refuge is an important stop along the Mississippi Flyway and it was severely damaged when Hurricane Katrina hit. They are still working to restore the area and support the migratory birds who often fly through here during the annual migration. The best time to see thousands of birds at a time is during the fall and spring. If you're in New Orleans, a visit to the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge will always be worth your time.
